What are search engines?

Search engines are essentially powerful online tools that allow you to quickly and efficiently find information on the internet.

They work by crawling, indexing and ranking countless web pages to deliver relevant results based on your search query. The most well-known search engine is Google, which has by far the largest market share worldwide.

Other popular search engines include Microsoft's Bing, Yahoo, and DuckDuckGo, which is known for its focus on privacy protection.

Each of these search engines offers its own unique features and benefits, but they all share the same goal: helping users quickly find the information they need.

How does a search engine work?

Search engines work much like libraries for the internet. They collect and organize information from millions of websites, sorting this information by relevance and reliability.

When you search for something, search engines use complex algorithms to quickly find the most useful and relevant results for you. This ensures you can quickly find what you need.

Which search engines are there?

Google: The most popular search engine worldwide.
Bing: A Microsoft search engine often used as an alternative to Google.
Yahoo: One of the original search engines, now powered by Bing.

How does a search engine work?

Search engines are complex systems. But essentially, they all operate using the same three main processes: crawling, indexing, and ranking.

Crawling

When search engines scan web pages, we call this crawling. They use crawlers, also known as spiders. These bots follow links from page to page to discover new and updated content.

Crawlers often start with a list of known URLs. As they visit these known pages, they look for links to other pages to add to their list of pages to crawl later.

Indexing

The discovered pages are analyzed and stored in a massive database, also known as an index. All content is structured and categorized within this index.

During indexing, search engines analyze the content of a page, including the text and other relevant data (such as images, titles, headings, and metadata) to understand what the page is about.

Ranking

When a user searches in a search engine, the engine scans the index and displays the results ranked by relevance and quality.

The search engine's algorithm determines the order of search results by considering various ranking factors such as keywords, backlinks, and user experience.

Search engine positions

The position of a website in the search results, also known as its ranking, is crucial for generating organic traffic. Websites that appear higher in the results typically receive more clicks and traffic. The position is determined by various factors, including the relevance of the content, the quality of backlinks, and the user experience on the website.

Why is search engine position important?

Most users click on one of the top results on the search engine results page (SERP). That's why it's important to rank highly to attract more traffic and potential customers to your website. A higher position also means greater visibility and credibility.

What are ranking factors?

There are hundreds of factors that influence a website's ranking. Search engines like Google often keep the exact details of how it works a closely guarded secret. As an SEO specialist, however, you can infer what the ranking factors are based on statistics, experience, and research.

Research shows that these are the most important ranking factors:

Content quality

The relevance and depth of the content on your website. Search engines prefer websites with high-quality, relevant content that meets users' search intent.

If you have a website, it's a good idea to regularly update your content and continue adding new valuable information.

Number and quality of backlinks

The number and quality of incoming links from other websites. Backlinks act as votes of confidence from other sites. The more high-quality backlinks you have, the higher your website will rank. However, it's important to focus on the quality of backlinks rather than just the quantity.

Quality of user experience (UX)

How users interact with your site, including load speed and mobile-friendliness. A website that loads quickly, is easy to navigate, and works well on mobile devices provides a better user experience and is more likely to rank higher.

Technical SEO setup

Aspects such as your website's structure, XML sitemaps, and robots.txt files. Technical SEO involves optimizing the backend of your website so that search engines can easily crawl and index it. This includes improving load speed, using SSL certificates, and ensuring a mobile-friendly design.

Keyword optimization

The use of relevant keywords in your content, meta tags, and headers. Keywords are the words and phrases users type into search engines. By strategically using these keywords in your content and metadata, you help search engines understand what your page is about.

SEO metrics

You have a website up and running, you're actively working on SEO, but what exactly are your results? Of course, measuring is knowing!

SEO metrics refer to the data you use to measure the success of your SEO efforts. These are the numbers you need to keep an eye on to see how everything is performing.

Organic traffic

Organic traffic refers to the number of visitors who reach your website via search engines like Google without the use of paid advertisements.

You get organic traffic when your website ranks highly in search results thanks to your SEO efforts. Analyzing organic traffic helps you understand which keywords and pages are effective in attracting visitors. You can then use this data to refine your SEO strategy and create more targeted and valuable content.

Click-through rate (CTR)

The click-through rate (CTR) is the percentage of people who click on your link after seeing it in the search results. It is calculated by dividing the number of clicks by the number of impressions (how often your link is shown) and multiplying by 100. A high CTR means your title and meta description are attractive and relevant to users.

A low CTR may indicate that your titles and descriptions need to be optimized to better align with users' search intent.

Bounce rate

The bounce rate is the percentage of visitors who leave your site after viewing only one page. This may indicate that visitors are not finding what they're looking for or that your site's content is not engaging enough to encourage further exploration.

A high bounce rate can signal issues such as irrelevant content, poor navigation, or slow load times. It's important to monitor this rate and see if you can reduce it by improving the user experience and the quality of your content.

Average session duration

How long visitors stay on your website on average. A longer session duration typically means your content is engaging and valuable to your visitors. This can also lead to better rankings in search engines, as it signals that users find your site useful.

To increase session duration, you can improve the quality of your content, add internal links, and integrate multimedia elements such as videos and infographics.

Conversion rate

The conversion rate is the percentage of visitors who take a desired action on your website, such as making a purchase, filling out a form, or signing up for a newsletter. This percentage is calculated by dividing the number of conversions by the total number of visitors and multiplying by 100.

A high conversion rate can often directly contribute to your business growth. You can achieve this by optimizing your calls-to-action, improving the user experience, and conducting A/B tests to see what works best.

Frequently asked questions about SEO

What is the difference between SEO and SEA?

SEO focuses on organic search results, meaning results from search engines themselves, while SEA (Search Engine Advertising) involves paid advertisements in the search results. SEO is a long-term strategy aimed at driving more traffic to your website without purchasing clicks, and therefore without direct cost-per-click expenses. SEA always involves advertising, where you pay for cost-per-clicks or cost-per-impressions.

How long does it take to see results from SEO?

It's important to realize that SEO is a long-term strategy, and it can take a long time before you see improvements. However, this strongly depends on various factors such as the competition in your industry, the state of your website, and the effectiveness of your SEO strategy.

Do I need technical knowledge for SEO?

While technical knowledge can be very useful, it is not necessary to be a tech expert. There are many tools and resources available to help you with SEO, even without a technical background. A basic understanding of how search engines work and the key ranking factors is often enough to get started.

How often should I update my content for SEO?

Regularly updating your content can help improve your ranking. Search engines prefer current and relevant content. While there isn't a strict guideline, it's always good to plan for adding or updating your content. Of course, weekly updates are better than annual ones. Try to review and update your most important pages at least once a quarter.

What are long-tail keywords and why are they important?

Long-tail keywords are longer, more specific search terms that often have less competition and are more relevant to specific search queries. They can help attract more targeted traffic to your website and increase the likelihood of conversions. Especially with the rise of voice search and more conversational queries, long-tail keywords are becoming increasingly important.

A good question, but a difficult one to answer, since the answer depends precisely on your wishes and needs.
