SEO glossary

Whether you're a beginner or already have some experience with search engine optimization, understanding these SEO terms is essential for improving your website’s visibility in search engines like Google.

Each concept helps you expand and apply your SEO knowledge. By learning and implementing these concepts, you can improve your website’s organic search results, generate more traffic, and increase your online success.

Overview of the terms

Backlinks

Backlinks are links from other websites that point to your website. They are seen as votes of confidence by search engines. The more high-quality backlinks you have, the higher your website can appear in search results.

Black Hat SEO

Black Hat SEO involves techniques that go against search engine guidelines to quickly achieve higher rankings. Examples include keyword stuffing, cloaking, and the use of link farms. While these methods may yield results in the short term, they can ultimately lead to severe penalties from search engines.

Bounce Rate (Bounce rate)

Bounce rate is the percentage of visitors who leave your site after viewing only one page. A high bounce rate may indicate irrelevant content or a poor user experience.

Canonical URL

A canonical URL is a way to tell search engines which version of a URL you want them to consider as the original. This helps prevent duplicate content issues by clearly indicating which page should be indexed.

Click-Through-Rate (CTR)

CTR is the percentage of people who click on a link after seeing it in the search results. It is calculated by dividing the number of clicks by the number of impressions and multiplying by 100.

Conversion Rate

Conversion rate is the percentage of visitors who take a desired action, such as making a purchase or filling out a form. Improving your conversion rate can directly contribute to the growth of your business.

Crawling

Crawling is the process by which search engines scan web pages to discover and index content. Search engines use crawlers or spiders to follow links and find new or updated pages.

Crawl Budget

Crawl budget is the amount of time and resources a search engine spends crawling your website. Optimizing your site structure and removing unnecessary pages can help you use your crawl budget more effectively.

Duplicate Content

Duplicate content refers to identical or very similar content on multiple URLs. This can be confusing for search engines and may lead to lower rankings. Using canonical tags can help prevent this issue.

Featured Snippets

Featured snippets are short summaries of answers to search queries that appear at the top of search results. They are designed to give users the best answer quickly without requiring further clicks.

Headings

Headings (H1, H2, H3, etc.) are HTML tags that indicate the hierarchy of content on a page. They help search engines and users understand the structure and key points of a page.

Keyword Cannibalization

Keyword cannibalization occurs when multiple pages on your website rank for the same keyword, causing them to compete with each other. This can harm your site’s SEO performance. It’s important to carefully assign keywords to avoid this.

Keyword Density

Keyword density refers to the number of times a keyword appears relative to the total number of words on a page. While keyword density is important, its use should remain natural and relevant to avoid keyword stuffing.

Keyword Research

Keyword research is the process of identifying keywords and phrases that people use to find information. This helps create content that aligns with user search intent and improves your SEO strategy.

Keyword Stuffing

Keyword stuffing is the excessive use of keywords on a page in an attempt to rank higher in search results. This is considered a black hat SEO technique and can lead to penalties from search engines.

Landing Page

A landing page is a specific web page where visitors arrive after clicking a link. This page is often designed to encourage a specific action, such as making a purchase or filling out a form.

Link Building

Link building is the process of obtaining backlinks from other websites to your site. This helps improve the authority and visibility of your website in search engines.

Link Juice

Link juice is a term used to describe the value or authority passed from one page to another through a link. High-quality backlinks can pass more link juice and improve your website’s SEO performance.

Long-Tail Keywords

Long-tail keywords are longer, more specific keywords that have less competition but can attract highly targeted traffic. They are often three or more words long and help reach niche audiences.

Meta Description

A meta description is a short summary of a page’s content displayed in search results. It helps users understand what the page is about and influences the CTR.

Meta Tags

Meta tags are HTML elements that provide information about the content of a web page. They include meta descriptions, meta keywords, and other metadata that help search engines index and rank pages.

On-Page SEO

On-Page SEO refers to all optimizations performed directly on the website itself. This includes optimizing content, using the right keywords, improving page load speed, and ensuring a good user experience.

Organic Traffic

Organic traffic is the number of visitors who reach your site via search engines without paid advertisements. Improving your SEO strategy can help generate more organic traffic.

Page Authority (PA)

Page Authority is a score that indicates the likelihood that a specific page will rank highly in search results. This score is based on various factors, including the quality of backlinks and the overall SEO performance of the page.

Page Speed

Page speed is the time it takes for a web page to fully load. Faster load times improve the user experience and can contribute to higher search engine rankings.

Paid Search

Paid search, also known as SEA (Search Engine Advertising), involves paid advertisements in search results. This helps generate traffic quickly and increase a website’s visibility.

Robots.txt

The robots.txt file is a text file that provides instructions to search engine crawlers about which pages or sections of a website they may or may not crawl. This helps manage the indexing of your site.

Schema Markup

Schema markup is a form of structured data that helps search engines better understand the content of a page. This can lead to improved display of your page in search results, such as rich snippets.

Search Engine Marketing (SEM)

SEM encompasses both SEO and SEA. The goal is to improve a website’s visibility in search results through both organic optimization and paid advertisements.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

SEO is the process of optimizing a website to increase its visibility when people search for products or services related to a business in search engines like Google.

Search Engine Results Page (SERP)

The SERP is the page that search engines display after a search query is entered. It contains both organic search results and paid advertisements, as well as other enriched elements like featured snippets.

Title Tag

The title tag is an HTML element that specifies the title of a web page. This title is displayed in search results and at the top of the browser and plays an important role in SEO.

Traffic

Traffic refers to the visitors who visit your website. This can be organic, paid, direct, or via referrals. Measuring traffic is essential for evaluating the effectiveness of your marketing strategies.

Trust Flow

Trust Flow is a metric that measures the quality of backlinks to a website. It helps determine the reliability and authority of a website based on the quality of incoming links.

White Hat SEO

White Hat SEO involves ethical and sustainable optimization techniques that comply with search engine guidelines. Examples include creating high-quality content, obtaining natural backlinks, and improving the user experience.

How quickly can you get started?

Our motto is 'as quickly as possible!' That means we can often schedule a meeting the same week. This could be an online meeting, but also a meeting at our office in Tilburg, at your company, or somewhere in between.

The start of your project, so the beginning of the functional design or the design, always takes place within 2 weeks. We then proceed with programming, testing, and delivery to keep the lead time as short as possible.

Are you already a customer? Then we’ll of course help you on the same day if possible!

What do you expect from me upfront?

When you start your web project, it's helpful to think about a number of things. This also applies if you have a question about marketing, website translation, or improving your SEO or conversion.

We’ve also written a great blog post about five things you should know before starting a website.

Furthermore, we naturally expect that we can work together in a pleasant and productive way. In our view, we do this in the easiest and most transparent way possible. With us, you’ll always be talking to people who know their field inside out and are passionate about what they do.

Do you also offer hosting and maintenance?

Absolutely! We handle all technical maintenance for your website. This includes not only hosting, but also the maintenance of your website, application, or dedicated server.

Often, our customers choose to manage their website and content themselves. However, if you don’t have the time or simply prefer to outsource it, we can take care of that for you as well.

Together with you, we’d be happy to set up, migrate, and maintain your website and social media.

Which software or CMS do you recommend?

Which software or CMS is best for you depends entirely on your needs. There is a lot of software available that you can use to set up great websites and web projects.

We prefer to work with open source systems, or systems where we have extensive experience, so that we can guarantee the quality of our work. We work with WordPress, Drupal, Magento and TYPO3, among others. We also work with the Laravel framework and the Laravel-based CMS Exolog.

Every system has its advantages and disadvantages, which we would be happy to discuss with you, so that you always make the best choice for your project. Do you have an interesting system, clever software or a great CMS that we should know about? Feel free to discuss it with us!

How much does my new website cost?

A good question, but a difficult one to answer, since the answer depends precisely on your wishes and needs.

Building a custom-designed and programmed website is a different story than simply choosing and adjusting a template. Extensive websites, portals, extranets and webshops with various integrations naturally come at a significantly higher cost than simple websites. Please feel free to contact us with your question!
