5 things you need to know before starting a website

How would you like to work with us.

Your website is an important part of your business. And since we like to do things well—and as a business owner, you probably do too—it’s important to know exactly what you want.

But we also understand that it can sometimes be difficult to explain precisely what you want. So here are some tips to keep in mind before you contact us with your ideas. We’d love to hear what you envision, from the appearance to the content, so we can create a custom website that aligns with all your preferences and wishes.

What is the purpose of your website?

This is by far the most important thing to know. If you don’t know the purpose of your website, how can we know? We can’t build a website for you if the site’s purpose is unclear, because then it won’t be an effective site.

So you need to take some time beforehand to figure out exactly what your organization or business offers and what your mission and core values are.

That way, when we meet to discuss your site, you’ll already have a solid foundation for the conversation. That clarity enables us to build a website that’s as tailored as possible, based on your business’s purpose and core values.

Who is your website for?

In addition to your business goals, you also need to know who your target audience is—or who your audiences are! Who visits your website? What do they come to do? What actions do they want to take? What questions do they want answered? What do they want to get out of your site?

These are questions you need to ask yourself before talking to us about a website. Because if you don’t know your target audience, we can’t create a website that’s fully aligned with your business in the way you want, or that appeals to both your current and potential customers in your target audience.

Do you know everything about search engines and SEO?

If you don’t, there’s no need to worry—we can explain everything to you as we go through the process.

But sometimes people think that once the website is built and live, users will automatically find your site and be able to use it, and that traffic will quickly increase. That’s exactly not how it works. That’s why it’s important that, alongside your website, your SEO is also optimized.

Search engines are a bit like phone books. People used to use the phone book to find out who you were and then contact you. That’s exactly what search engines do for users today.

Optimizing your website for search engines is therefore the key to generating traffic to your site.

What kind of content do you need?

You may have heard the saying “content is king.” Well, it’s absolutely true! What you share on your website is just as important as knowing what your website is for. Content helps define your brand. It’s everything you present to your audience and includes text, images, video, logos, and slogans. It’s important to take the time to clearly decide what your content will be before you start building a website. Finding this difficult? No problem. We’d be happy to help you think it through and can assist with developing a content strategy or writing the right texts.

Once you know what your content will be, it’s important to let the web designer know your ideas and what you want in terms of content, so the designer can align your website and content perfectly.

What is your budget?

The first question many business owners ask us is, “How much will my website cost?”

Our standard answer is always: “Honestly, it depends on exactly what you want.” You can work with a standard template or theme. That saves on costs, but your website will look more like other businesses’.

Or you can opt for a custom website. That’s more expensive, but it’s fully tailored to your wishes and results in a distinctive website with a unique look.

Keep in mind that a website is a long-term investment for your business. So it’s worth spending that little bit extra. Especially since your site is likely the first impression a user gets of your business—and your goal is to generate revenue from your website.
